Will Eisner Week: March 1 – 7

Will Eisner Week is coming up the week of March 1- 7. My Comics Club is planning activities to educate their classmates about Will Eisner’s legacy, including a presentation at our all-school assembly. For most of the school community, this will be the first time they have heard of Will Eisner, which is a shame. He was pivotal in the development of the graphic novel format and knew the benefits of comics in libraries and schools. It is essential to know our history and the contributions of those who came before us.

From the Will Eisner Foundation Website:

Will Eisner Week is named for the comics and graphic novel pioneer Will Eisner, who was one of the most innovative and revered figures in comics history.

Will Eisner Week is an annual celebration of his legacy and the world of comics and graphic novels with events presented in libraries, schools, museums, bookstores, and comic book shops around the world.

Were he alive today, Will Eisner would be thrilled about the growth and appreciation of comics and graphic novels. He was a beacon of light, impressing us with his relentless drive and innovation.

The Will Eisner Foundation provides numerous, free resources including A Will Eisner Week Playbook. I also wrote a comic, Will Eisner: Father of the Graphic Novel, as a quick introduction for students. Illustrated by Matt Strackbein and edited by Dr. Katie Monnin, this comics is available online for free. I hope you download and enjoy reading it. It was an honor to write.
